The Scottish Fiddle Concept has a real part to play in the cultural life of Scotland and further afield. It was founded by two of Scotland’s foremost violinists – Angus Anderson and Angus Ramsay to illustrate the fiddle music of their native soil played with all the style and facility of modern violin technique. Their performances fit any venue from the concert platform, to country house surroundings, and especially the visitor centres surrounding Scotland’s Whisky Distilleries.
The performances are adaptable as background music and are interchangeable with other genres of music from Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern – including popular styles such as Joplin’s Ragtime.
Angus Ramsay studied with Leonard Friedman and Max Rostal at the Music Conservatoire in Bern, Switzerland. He enjoyed a career playing both in chamber music, as a soloist and also as a principal player in the Scottish Opera Orchestra. He also teaches both privately and in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He is Artistic Director of The Music Parlour and of the Cantilena Festival held on Islay.
Angus Anderson was born in Glasgow and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He won a scholarship to the International School of Masterclasses (under Yehudi Menuhin ) in Gstaad, Switzerland.
He began his orchestral career as a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London and progressed as a Principal player in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow, followed by Associate Leader of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and then Leader of the Scottish Opera Orchestra. The last eleven years of his orchestral career were spent in London as a member of one of the world’s ‘great’ orchestras, The Philharmonia.
Always active as a soloist and chamber music player he performed Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for Scottish Television with the ensemble Cantilena: also the complete cycle of Beethoven Violin and Piano sonatas, for Glasgow Mayfest at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire.
Now retired to the Kingdom of Fife he is active as a soloist and chamber music player with the Eumelia Ensemble, which he founded, and busy as a teacher at Aberdeen City Music School, and privately.
He has teamed up again with violinist Angus Ramsay to revive and promote THE SCOTTISH FIDDLE CONCEPT which they formed during their years working together at Scottish Opera.
The first concert of this revival took place at Lochranza, Isle of Arran on the 22nd of August 2019.
