Pirasti Trio or Quartet

Stanford piano trio no 2 in G minor, op 73

NICHOLAS MILLER was born in Hertfordshire and began learning the violin at the age of eight.  Whilst still at school he performed regularly at major London venues and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in their ‘Young Music Makers’ series. Following a period of study with Felix Andrievsky he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Carmel Kaine, where he won numerous prizes for both solo and chamber music.  He was invited to perform the Max Bruch concerto with the Academy Orchestra and was also awarded the Recital Diploma.

During this period he won an English Speaking Union Scholarship to the Yale University Summer School in Connecticut, USA.  The following year, with awards from the Countess of Munster Trust, Martin Fund and the Royal Society of Arts, Nicholas commenced two years study at the Juilliard School, New York with the legendary Dorothy DeLay.
Nicholas has appeared throughout Britain, Europe and the United States including performances at the Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall, St. John’s Smiths Square, London and Alice Tully Hall, New York. He has broadcast on Danish, Spanish, Dutch and American radio as well as live on BBC Radio 3 from the Bath International Music Festival.

Prior to his appointment in 1990 as a professor at the Royal Academy of Music he taught at the Yehudi Menuhin School. Menuhin said of his teaching “I have admired the results you have obtained as well as the quality of playing which you have inspired.”  Nicholas has been recently made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music.

ALISON WELLS teaches cello at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and is a regular faculty member at the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in the USA.  Her career as a chamber musician has taken her throughout Europe, North America and Asia, performing at venues including the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room and New York’s 92nd Street Y and Merkin Hall.  She was featured in a Channel 4 documentary on the Chamber Music of Penderecki, performing his 2nd string quartet and working with the composer.
Alison is a graduate of Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music, studying with Ralph Kirshbaum and David Strange.  She holds a doctorate from Yale University, where she studied with Aldo Parisot as a Harkness Fellow.  Additional awards enabled her to undertake further studies at Banff, Prussia Cove and the International Menuhin Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland.  In 1988 she joined the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, under Simon Rattle, and became an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music.  The following year she gave her London recital debut at the South Bank, sponsored by the Maisie Lewis Young Artists’ Trust.  Alison is a former faculty member of the Peabody Conservatory and the Cleveland Institute of Music in the USA, and Trinity College of Music and the Purcell School in London.  She has served on the faculties of the Dartington and Aberystwyth festivals in Britain, and ENCORE School for Strings, Madeline Island Festival, ARIA and the Heifetz Institute in the US.  In 2001 she became the 1st British string player to be licensed as a Body Mapping Educator.

Pianist and composer JEFFREY SHARKEY became Principal of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in September 2014, leading Scotland’s national conservatoire of dance, drama, music, production and screen.  In addition to his duties as principal, he teaches chamber music at the conservatoire and maintains his performance collaborations with both teachers and with students.  He became a British citizen in 1993 and his career spans work in both the UK and the USA.
Jeffrey lived in the United Kingdom for 13 years, serving as Director of Music at the Purcell School in London and head of academic music at Wells Cathedral School where he started the school’s composition department.  He maintained his performing profile while in the United States, coaching chamber music as a faculty member and in master classes and summer festivals throughout the country.  He performed with the Baltimore Symphony and collaborated with members of the Cleveland, Orion, and Cavani Quartets.  Jeffrey Sharkey is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music where he was the conservatory’s first double major in piano and composition.  He earned a Master of Music degree in composition from Yale University and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge.  His teachers have included pianists John Browning, Boris Berman, Constance Keene and Peter Frankl and composers Aaron Copland, Jacob Druckman, Earle Brown, John Corigliano and Robin Holloway.
Jeffrey was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2022.

The Pirasti Trio collaborates regularly with other instrumentalists to include piano quartets and quintets by Mozart, Schumann and Brahms, Stanford and Fauré.

The Pirasti Trio will also appear in quartet format with violist Sophie Renshaw, and in quintet format with Sophie and a guest violinist.  Their repertoire will include Brahms, Schumann, Dvořák and Fauré.

Throughout her viola playing career, Sophie Renshaw has sought to develop both sides of her musicianship as interpreter and innovator. Her 38 years of professional playing began as violist in the Orford String Quartet, in residence at the University of Toronto. She later took up the Principal Viola position in the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and has performed as a chamber musician at numerous festivals, including the International Festivals of Gstaad, Kuhmo, ISM Prussia Cove, London Proms and Carnegie Hall recital series.

Her orchestral and ensemble work has spanned those orchestras that use elements of Historically Informed Performance Practice such as Orchestre Romantique et Revolutionaire and Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment to the modern orchestra – BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Royal London Philharmonic. She has been guest Principal Viola with English National Opera, Glyndebourne and Holland Park Opera and many of the UK’s leading chamber orchestras including Britten Sinfonia, Orchestra of St Martin in the Fields and English Chamber Orchestra.

She co-founded the Blue Rider Ensemble, an instrumental-theatre group that set out to extend the expressive and dramatic range for instrumentalists in performance. Sophie has also participated in numerous projects by Ensemble Modern and London Sinfonietta, toured Japan with Ruichi Sakamoto’s opera “Life” and played live on stage to accompany the Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company.

In 2019 Sophie created arrangements for Trio Mythos (with violinist Lucy Russell and cellist Ruth Phillips)  to accompany original songs by Northumbrian singer-songwriter duo Brothers Gillespie and Provencal polyphonic vocal trio Tant Que Li Siam which was recorded for CD.

Troppos

Sergio Vega Domínguez (oboe) was born in Sevilla, Spain. He began studying the oboe at the age of 6, encouraged by his father who was a double bass player. When he was 18 he commenced his studies at the Conservatorio Rafael Orozco in Cordoba studying under Jacobo Rodriguez Garcia and graduated with an honours degree.  He then moved to Scotland and completed his Masters Degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with Stephen West and Stéphane Rancourt. Some of his greatest achievements whilst studying were… winning an ABRSM scholarship (2015), receiving a place on the BBCSSO and the RSNO’s mentoring schemes and coming first in the Classic Concerto Competition, Governor’s Recital Prize and the Mary D Adams Prize for Chamber Music.
Sergio currently works as a freelancer with groups and orchestras such as Orquesta de Córdoba, PYP Orchestra, Scottish Opera, Royal Northern Symphonia and the Red Note Ensemble.  He also has worked with the students of the Junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, teaching them how to make reeds.

Underground Tango

Francisco (Paco) Merino (tuba) is a Glasgow based performer who was also born in Spain.  He graduated from the Conservatoire of Granada (Spain) and received his Masters in Music Performance Degree (MMus) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.  During his time in education he had the opportunity to study with famous tuba players such as Josefz Baszinska, Mel Culbertson, David Llacer and Alex Marco. 
 Francisco has played with several orchestras such as the Orchestra of the Region of Murcia, the Orchestra of Granada and has also participated in the Apprenticeship Scheme of the BBCSSO and RSNO.  He has been a member of various chamber ensembles throughout his career, including the brass quintets Soul Metals and Escocia Brass, winning the David James Brass Prize with the latter.

Paweł  Jaworski is a Polish clarinettist and music tutor.  Paweł  graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where he achieved a Bachelor of Music degree with Honours (2017) and Masters of Music Performance degree (2019).  He was awarded an RCS Trust Postgraduate Scholarship to commence his Master of Music degree. He also won a Help Musicians UK Postgraduate Award.  He is currently the Clarinet and Piano tutor at the Borders School of Music.  As a soloist, Paweł has performed with the RCS Symphony as winner of the Classical Concerto Competition.  He also currently plays with the Scotland Chamber Orchestra as well as other major orchestras in Scotland and is a member of The Silver Keys clarinet quartet.

Scottish violinist Joe Hodson grew up in Galloway and began his studies aged four.  At fourteen, he commenced studies with Angus Anderson at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Junior department, ultimately relocating to Aberdeen to attend Aberdeen City Music School to access more intensive study.  After training at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he has an incredible background both as a tutor and as a professional musician. 

Kelvingrove

Eric Alfonso (percussion) is a professional musician and percussion instructor who specialises in Latin (Drums and Percussion). He is a graduate from the Escuela Nacional Instructors de Arte in Havana, Cuba. He worked as Percussion Instructor in Secondary Schools and Universities in Matanzas, Cuba. In 1991 he started to play drums and percussion with different entertainment bands in various resorts in Varadero, Cuba, and in 2001 he played for six months in the Melia Volcan Hotel in Lanzarote, Canary Isles as a resident musician gaining much experience.

He moved to the UK in 2003, recording and playing with Salsa Celtica, Son al Son, Rumba Caliente, Omar Puentes, Soulatino and many others. He has also performed at various festivals and venues over the years, including Glastonbury, Celtic Connections, Edinburgh Festival, T in the Park and The Jazz Cafe in London. He has also had several TV appearances with Salsa Celtica, for the BBC and played with the Glasgow Wind Band.

In August 2013 he recorded all the Latin Percussion for the Riverdance Company in Dublin for their new show “Heartbeat of Home”.

Eric is also a qualified Music / Percussion Instructor, and has worked for the last ten years for West Dunbartonshire Council working in Secondary Schools as a Drum and Percussion teacher instructing pupils from S1 basic level and S3 – S6 covering the Nat 3,4,5 and Higher level and Advanced Higher level SQA. He is also heavily involved with the end of term school concerts and events and helps organise and run the Funk School Band. He still performs regularly with many bands as a session performer.

The Silver Keys

Laura Thomson is a Scottish-American clarinetist who is passionate about exploring all styles of music and building a more inclusive community of the arts.
As a dedicated soloist and chamber musician, Laura has already received numerous awards and honours. Most recently, she received the 2022 Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Alumni “Make It Happen” Award.  While completing her Master of Music at the RCS she was Highly Commended in the 2019 Governors’ Woodwind Recital Competition as well as being a finalist in the 2018 Classical Concerto Competition.

In addition to performing with the Silver Keys, as a soloist she has performed with Glasgow Symphony Orchestra, Perth Symphony Orchestra, the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and for the Musica Scotica Celebration of Sir James MacMillan.  As an avid performer of contemporary music, she was a member of the American Modern Orchestra for the inaugural Mostly Modern Festival during the summer of 2018.

Laura holds a Master of Music from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and a Bachelor of Music with a Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music.  Her primary teachers have been John Cushing, Kenneth Grant and Luiz Coelho.

Matas Ščerbauskas first started playing the clarinet at the age of 8.  He began taking lessons at a local music school in the city of Kaunas, Lithuania and at age 15 continued his studies professionally at a Conservatoire in the same city.  During his studies there, he participated and received awards in various music competitions in Lithuania, Austria, and Ukraine.  In 2014 he was awarded prestigious recognition from the president of the Lithuanian Republic for his artistic achievements as a clarinet performer.

Matas started his undergraduate studies in clarinet performance at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2015 under teachers Yann Ghiro and John Cushing.  Since then, he has participated in many diverse musical productions with conservatoire students and teachers alike, including a solo debut alongside RCS wind orchestra and apprenticeship schemes, performing with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

In 2021, working with internationally renowned clarinetists Maximiliano Martin and Nicolas Baldeyrou, Matas graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with MMus Performance degree.

Jennifer Moss is delighted to be the newest player of the The Silver Keys. After previously living in Manchester, she now enjoys exploring a new music scene in Glasgow.  As a musician, she loves to combine her experience as an educator and performer for organisations such as the Benedetti Foundation, the Nevis Ensemble, Awards for Young Musicians, and In Harmony Opera North, by working in community contexts to share access to the joy of music.  Jennifer and her husband also perform as clarinet and cello ensemble, the Pancevski Duo, and she can sometimes be found in her living room playing the guitar very badly and pretending to be a singer-songwriter.
